Sacks of Grain and Endless Plains

The rhythmic clack-clack, clack-clack of the Iron Horse had become the heartbeat of our journey. Inside the wooden car, the air was thick with the scent of cedar oil and Clara’s sourdough. Barnaby had finally settled his heavy golden head on a pile of wool blankets, his tail giving an occasional, sleepy thump.
That was when the grain sack started to move.
The Surprise Passenger
Among the supplies Silas had packed for the Lavoy General Store were several heavy burlap sacks of oats. One of them, tucked in the corner, began to wiggle. Barnaby was on his feet in a second, his ears forward, a low "huff" of curiosity escaping his chest.
Out popped a scruffy, wiry head....then another. It wasn't mice, and it wasn't a shadow. It was a pair of stray terriers, barely more than pups, who must have slipped into the car back at the depot looking for a warm place to hide.
Clara gasped, but Barnaby simply walked over and gave the boldest one a gentle, welcoming lick right across the nose. In the world of the Boones, there was always room for a few more paws.
The Golden Horizon
While Silas shared a bit of dried beef with our new stowaways, the train slowed. Silas slid the heavy boxcar door open just a few inches, and the world changed.
The tight forests and gray stone buildings of the East were gone. In their place was the Great Prairie—an ocean of grass that rippled like water under the 1903 sun.
The Scent: It smelled of heat, wild sage, and sweet clover.
The Sight: For as far as Barnaby could see, there was nothing but golden earth meeting a sky so blue it looked painted.
The Sound: Beyond the engine’s hiss, there was a vast, heavy silence that felt like a secret.
Barnaby sat at the edge of the door, the wind feathering his golden fur back from his face. He looked at the endless plains and then back at Silas. They weren't just traveling anymore; they were arriving. Somewhere out there, past the horizon, Lavoy was waiting.
